Shetland 07-12 March 2025

After celebrating GM62 in Orkney and loving the history, we moved forward in time to Shetland, the centre of our trip. A really brief flight from Kirkwall to Sumburgh airport and then a long dark drive to Lerwick where we were staying in a tiny old fishing house in town.

Lerwick is like nowhere else I have ever been as the streets are narrow to shelter people from the weather and the sea. We did not get the full picture until our first morning out and about in horizontal rain. Never letting the side down we went on adventures on Mainland and some of the accessible islands but my plan to head to Saxa Vord to see the Spaceport will have to wait until my next trip.



Fiona wanted to see all the sights associated with "Shetland" such as Jimmy Perez' house and the scent of more than one murrrdr, which we did.

Shetland was a lot more rugged than Orkney and beautiful in its own right and we loved the people and listening to the accent. Fiona celebrated her Big Number Change when we were in Shetland and it was great to spend this time together. In a few years we will celebrate 35 years of wonderful MacLean friendship, so I wonder when we will start planning those events!

We even had a naughty Shetland Pony open the car door and try to get in! Although our birthday trip was a succession of cake and tea events interspersed with sightseeing, we had a wonderful time, just gassing to each other when driving and being stunned a the scenery.

And how much we laughed!
